Buying Cut fruit -Beware - better cut it yourself

July 31st, 2008 · 1 Comment

I got this through a forwarded email.  And I don’t even normally read anything that’s forwarded but this one caught my eye because it had Singapore on it.  I also checked and there is indeed a Waterloo Street in Singapore. (Whether that makes it credible, beats me.)   Now, I don’t know if this is [...]

On buffet at the Greenhouse in Ritz Carlton and tips on how to make the most of buffet meals

June 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment

For my birthday, we had buffet dinner at the Greenhouse in Ritz Carlton.
What made me decide to have dinner there was it was the restaurant with the highest overall rating that had multiple reviews from HungryGoWhere.com.
It was my first time there and here’s my first impression of the place.

Slow cooking without electricity and gas

May 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Yesterday, I was planning on cooking pumpkin soup for dinner but pumpkin soup needs to be simmered for some time so that the pumpkin would be soft enough to puree. At the same time I had to go back to the mall and have the shirts I recently bought for my dad changed to [...]

What do you do with 30 eggs?

April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Last weekend, Carrefour was giving away a tray of 30 eggs for a minimum purchase of S$60.00. Of course me, being Pinoy, will never pass up anything that’s free. So I claimed my free 30 eggs even though Mr. Tsiken doesn’t eat eggs and we probably only consumed a dozen eggs last year.

The 411 on Monosodium Glutamate or MSG

March 7th, 2008 · No Comments

I encountered this interesting article on MSG a few days ago.  Monosodium Gultamate or MSG or probably better known in the Philippines by the brand name Ajinomoto has always been believed to be harmful to your health.  I’ve seen many restaurants display a “No MSG” sign.  So what’s the real deal on MSG?

My own little herb garden

February 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Ok, it’s not really a garden and more like just 5 pots but it’s a good start. I’ve always wanted to have a garden where I can harvest my ingredients for tonight’s dinner from.
I initially wanted to put the plants on the countertop ala Barefoot Contessa but unfortunately there’s no more room in there. [...]

Food at the Singapore River Hongbao

February 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I was craving for some kikiam and squidballs and I couldn’t help but think about all those food stalls at the River Hongbao Celebration so off we went on a mission to sample all that food waiting for us at the River Hongbao… and maybe get a glimpse of the fireworks while we’re at it.
There [...]

Food Review: Family International Buffet Restaurant

November 16th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Yesterday, after watching Beowulf, we decided to eat somewhere at Orchard road. I wanted something that was not fast food so we walked along orchard looking for somewhere to eat. To make a long story short we ended up at Family International Buffet Restaurant, #05-30, Ngee Ann City. I’ve always been curious [...]

Food Review: Pepper Lunch

November 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Last week, Mr. Tsiken and I tried Pepper Lunch  twice.  Once at Takashimaya and the other time at Dhoby Gaut Exchange.  I heard that a restaurant with a very similar concept just opened in Trinoma and the actual Pepper Lunch franchise is also coming to Manila.
I liked the concept of a DIY steak fast food.  Since they serve [...]

Fried Prawn Mee

September 21st, 2007 · No Comments

It’s funny how people get curious when they see long lines for something.  They start hovering around the crowd and try to see what’s the fuss about.  This is how we found out about the fried prawn mee at the Food Rebuplic at the top floor of Wisma Atria on Orchard Rd.

Cheapy Chippy the British takeaway

July 15th, 2007 · No Comments

I’ve been meaning to try their BBF - Beer Battered Fish because it looks so appetizing in the picture displayed on their stalls.  It reminds me of fish and chips from Fish and Co.  So last weekend I decided to try it and got myself a major disappointment.
First off the BBF doesn’t look anything like [...]

Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant

July 2nd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Mrs. Tsiken loves Boon Tong Kee roasted chicken rice.  This is where we bring most of our guests to eat and it’s always patok with our guests.

Food

May 12th, 2007 · 1 Comment

The multiracial culture of Singapore is very much reflected in its food.  You’ll find a Hawker centre in almost every corner.
Probably the most popular dish in Singapore is the Hainanese Chicken Rice.  It’s one of my personal favorites (hence the name Ms. Tsiken).  There’s a lot of Chinese food here and I don’t know any [...]
