The much anticipated fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been called off by Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum after both parties failed to agree on drug testing procedures.
Mayweather is insisting on random blood testing even though the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which would oversee the bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, requires only urine testing. The blood testing became a big issue after Mayweather Sr. made unfounded accusations that Pacquiao was using performance enhancing drugs (PED). (Unless the PED’s name is Krista Ranillo, who is rumored to be knocked up by the Pac-man)
I can see why Pacquiao’s camp would not want the blood testing, at least no later than 24 days before the fight. Taking blood may affect Pacquiao’s fight because it could take a while for the body to replenish lost blood and Pacquiao needs to be in super tip top shape for the fight. I don’t know how much blood is taken for a blood drug test, but I know from experience those blood tests are not an energy booster. But why else would Mayweather insist on a blood test when Pacquiao has agreed to unlimited random urine testing? Mayweather may be subject to the same blood test procedures but he is much bigger than Pacquiao and will lose a less amount of blood than Pacquiao in terms of percentage.
Mayweather Jr and Sr should make the most of their size advantage and stop conjuring up sissy tactics. Win the fight fair and square where it matters – inside the ring.
