Pinoy in Singapore

Today is the start of the much awaited 2008 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.  It’s the first street night race in Asia.

I’m not much a fan of F1.  My knowledge is actually limited to knowing that Michael Schumacher is the best driver.  I didn’t even know he’s already retired.  The only teams I can probably name would be Ferrari, Maclaren and Toyota.  I only know Lewis Hamilton from all the pictures posted of him around Singapore and I didn’t even know until a while ago that he was driving for Maclaren.  I know he’s cute though.  Yeah, I admit I’m lame when it comes to F1. So I never really understood all the excitement about it.

I actually passed a chance to get to see Lewis Hamilton into the Hugo Boss F1 thingy as a photographer’s assistant.   The other assistant I work with got to see him and take a few good pictures with her phone.

But when we went to Funan today to get a screen protector for my new ipod touch which was near the race course, I could really feel the energy being created by all the F1 buzz.  There were a lot of people on the streets and we could hear the sound of the race cars.   It made me feel like I was inside a video game.  I used to imagine that the sound would be unbearably loud but surprisingly, the sound was like music to my ears.  I don’t know why but the sound of the race appealed to me.

Most of the course is surrounded by walls of sponsor ads so you couldn’t really see anything from the street.  But we found an area by Raffles City Mall where you can view a part of the course.  Well, hubby had to give me a lift.  Good thing I’m tiny and he’s big.  What’s nice was that it was at a turn so the cars would be “slow” enough to get a good look at.  I saw a few race cars pass by.  One was white with black details so it could’ve been Lewis Hamilton.

At least now I get what all the buzz is about.
