An officemate of hubby told him yesterday that there was this good fried chicken place in Geylang. So we decided to try it out for lunch today and decide for ourselves it’s true.
I think fried chicken is comfort food for a lot of Pinoys like me. It reminds me of birthday parties when I was a kid where the standard menu was fried chicken, spaghetti (which hubby calls spaketchup because a lot of them are cooked using banana ketchup) and your ever present Goldilocks mocha cake. Oh, don’t forget hotdog on sticks with marshmallows at the tip.
When it comes to fast food fried chicken, I’m really more of the Jollibee Chicken Joy type than KFC or McDonald’s fried chicken (though I’m not sure if the Mc Donald’s here in Singapore serve fried chicken.) I also like Max’s Fried Chicken because it is, as their ad says, “Sarap to the bones.” But Max’s is not fast food. As for KFC here in Singapore, they don’t serve unlimited gravy like in Manila. Actually they don’t serve gravy with your fried chicken at all. They give packets of chilli sauce instead. That’s a big turnoff for me since if there’s anything I like about KFC, it’s the gravy.
We called up Arnold’s Fried Chicken for delivery and ordered the Couple meal which includes 1/2 spring chicken, 3 pcs chicken, 1 coleslaw, 1 mashed potato, and 3 buns. Though the site says the price was $17.90 from the usual of $19.30, we paid $20.90. I guess delivery isn’t free.
And if you’re wondering, yes we eat that much. The servers at the Boon Tong Kee near our place can attest to how much we eat. But I suppose the Couple Meal can actually feed about 3-4 persons which is not bad.
The meal, though a little late, arrived still hot which was good. I liked their fried chicken. It’s almost like a hot and spicy Jollibee Chicken Joy. The chicken skin is nice and crispy and the meat is juicy. As for the spring chicken, I’ve tasted better ones. My “benchmark” for spring chicken is Tropical Hut’s spring chicken. And unfortunately Arnold’s spring chicken is no match but fortunately for Arnold’s Fried Chicken, Tropical Hut is in Manila miles and miles away it doesn’t even matter. Their coleslaw tastes better than KFC, and so do the mashed potatoes.
Now I know where to get fried chicken when I crave for it.
