Singapore’s Manpower Statistics for 2008 and Cost of Living

July 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Here’s something quite helpful for those who are currently or planning to look for employment in Singapore.

The Ministry of Manpower just released its Reports on Wages in Singapore for 2007 and the Manpower Statistics for 2008.  Now there’s a lot of information right there (and I mean a LOT), but I think most people will be interested in the wages report by occupation so one can more or less have a ballpark figure of what salary they should expect when finding employment.

You can download the reports from the Ministry of Manpower Website.

Read the Key findings of the Report here.

Table for Monthly Basic and Gross Wages of selected occupations in all industries, June 2007 can be found here.

More statistical tables on the Report on Wages in Singapore, 2007 can be found on this page.   I think most jobseekers would be interested in Tables 6 and 7 which is under Wage of Major Occupational Groups by Industry.

Hope this bit of info helps.

Important Note:

Though the wages when converted to Pesos may seem pretty high, don’t forget to consider the cost of living in Singapore which is also pretty high compared to Manila.

According to a 2006 survey from Mercer Human Resource Consulting on Cost of Living, Singapore ranks 17th on the most expensive places for expats with a COL index of 92.  Manila, Philippines ranks 141st at a COL index of 56.  Singapore is now up 3 places to 14th for the year 2007 with a COL index of 100.4.  In simple terms, cost of living in Singapore is almost twice as much in Manila.

I don’t quite understand sometimes why families who have decent lifestyles in the Philippines would migrate to other countries only to have their lifestyles degraded.  I thought the point of leaving the comforts of home is to live on greener pastures.  Just my 2 cents.
