The Southern Ridges – a lot of green in city

June 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

A few days ago, I took my friend Troy, who’s visiting from the Philippines, to check out the Southern Ridges. It’s a 9km chain of green spaces which spans across Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park and ends at West Coast Park, each seamlessly linked by foot trails and connection bridges. I figured it’s something that definitely has nothing similar in Manila and that his other friends in Singapore wouldn’t have already taken him to.

It was also an adventure for me coz I haven’t tried it out and I didn’t really know specifically where it was. So off we went near the Harbour Front Station where the Marang trail, which starts off the Southern Ridges, was.

We started at street level but after climbing up so many steps, we later found ourselves at the Jewel box in Mt. Faber which is one of the stops for the cable car rides.

The funny thing was I didn’t exactly tell Troy where we were going. He pretty much expected a lot of walking involved but he wasn’t expecting to climb a lot of steps. To my defense, I wasn’t expecting to go up a mountain either. :P

It was basically walking walking and walking until you get to the Henderson waves, which for me was the highlight of the trail. I’m not sure how long the Southern Ridges have existed but the Henderson waves looks pretty new. It’s an architectural piece of art. The wooden floors and the waves give it a sophisticated ambiance.

It’s also Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge connecting Mt. Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill park. It’s so high up that if you sit under the waves, you can forget where you are because all you can see are clouds especially if there are no other people around.

..To be continued
