Singapore is a very multiracial country. There are the Chinese, Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos, South Asians – Indians, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshi, the Caucasians… you name it. All of them exist in harmony in this little country at the southern tip of continental Asia.Â
But because there’s a lot of different cultures, it would be highly improbable not to have a misunderstanding with people that have a different culture than ours. If you do experience that, just remember always that other people didn’t grow up in the same culture as ours. We need to respect their culture just as they should respect ours. I feel most of the misunderstandings arise from miscommunication or meanings getting lost in translation. For example, I’ve come across some people who seem to lack the recommended daily allowance of happy juice. They talk to you in a get-out-of-my-face kind of tone but eventually you realize they’re not really mad at you. It’s just how they are.Â
